The initiative started out in 1993 with the noble objective of transforming Port Klang as the national load center and regional transhipment hub. Several strategies were outlined in the Seventh Malaysia Plan leading to the creation of the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ).
The project was modelled after the Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai which spans an area of 12,000 acres and provides employment to over 130,000 people.
In 2008, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) was commissioned under the instructions of the Minister of Transport to review the PKFZ project amidst controversy surrounding its rising costs.
The Position Review of Port Klang Free Zone Project and Port Klang Free Zone Sdn. Bhd. was released to the public on 27th May 2009. The Position Review outlined 20 issues for the attention of the Board of Directors.
